Abstract Art

Abstract Art can be defined as art that does not identify with any recognizable object. The art emphasizes colors and lines and geometrical forms that allow the admirer to define the imagery. Abstract art is not new to the fashion world. Matter of fact, fashion has been known to be a canvas for the art form. For decades, designers and brands utilized artists shapes, lines and splashes of color to create masterpieces. Fabrics have been dyed and individual fibers combined to create vibrancy and depth just like art. Over the years, fashion has truly paid homage to the world of Abstract Art.

Piet Mondrian, Composite Red, Blue, Yellow; Yves Saint Laurent

In 1965, Yves Saint Laurent haute couture collection paid tribute to Dutch Abstract artist, Piet Mondrian. The collection, Mondrian Revolution featured everything from day suits to casual wear, yet it was the cocktail dresses that stole the show. Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow of 1930 was Yves Saint Laurent focal point. The usage of Mondrian three primary colors with the emphasis on black and white vertical and horizontal lines made the cocktail dresses walkable art. Mondrian art is known for short abbreviated lines which Yves Saint Laurent captured effortlessly. The collection involved many artists but without a doubt, it was the Mondrian inspiration that reigned supreme.

Van Gogh, The Starry Night

The Rodarte S/S 2012 collection was a memorable honor to no other than Van Gogh. Van Gogh is an artist who needs absolutely no introduction. The Impressionist work can be recognized for his strong, yet deliberate brushworks. Van Gogh once said, “There is no blue without yellow and without orange”. His logic couldn’t be made more clear than what we witnessed on the runway by Rodarte. The collection was vibrant, whimsical and fairytale like. The fabrics and textures of the garments appeared to transform at an eye’s glance. The feeling was that of witnessing a cocoon evolving into a butterfly - mystical. Van Gogh art depicts hope that even in darkness light awaits us. Rodarte collection captured that hopefulness.

It was Oscar de la Renta and Dolce & Gabbana, 2018 and Maison Margiela, 2016 artistic designs that showed admiration to one of my favorite artist, Jackson Pollock. Pollock was an American painter and known as a leader of Abstract Art Expressionism; an art form that was intentionally free and considered “action painting”. Pollock abstract art was celebrated for his renowned technique of radical pour creating the "drip" technique. Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana and Maison Margiela created color splattered designs kindly mimicking Pollock's drip.

Abstract art will always have an effect on fashion. Partly due to regal similarities because fashion is art and designers are artist. The trend of Abstract art depicting fashion will grow on and reinvent and reposition style by way of newness with bolder lines, exuberant colors and sharper shapes. One thing is certain, Abstract art will be an influence of fashion elegance for many decades to come!

Be Well.
